Healthy green plants thriving near a bright window.

Cultivating Growth

In 2018, with some apprehension, I purchased a fiddle fig tree about two feet tall. I heard they could be finicky plants and not easy to care for. But my fiddle fig, nicknamed Hazel Fig, was a happy plant with just the right amount of early morning sunlight and aerated water.

When we moved to Virginia, I feared that the trauma of moving would damage my beautiful tree, which then stood about seven feet tall. But our new place gave her good sunlight, and she thrived.

Earlier this year, with Hazel Fig back home in North Carolina, she was almost touching our nine-foot ceiling. After some research, I knew that I had to cut her back. Oh my, I could hardly bear to do it. This companion tree had become a symbol of life and growth after cancer treatment and all the changes in my life.

Here she is today with many new leaves sprouting in several directions. And her top, growing roots will be planted in a new pot soon.

My Hazel Fig is a metaphor for a whole life. While you are going along and, by all appearances, even thriving, at some point, change is a good thing and necessary for you to overcome fears and grow.
